Gars (Ginglymodi) belong to the family Lepisosteidae and are among the most primitive of predatory fishes.  Living members of this family are only found in North & Central America, represented by two genera and seven species:

Genus: Lepisosteus

    Longnose gar (Lepisosteus osseus)

       

 

    Shortnose gar (Lepisosteus platostomus)

       

 

    Spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus)

       

 

    Florida gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus)

       

 

Genus: Atractosteus

    Alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula)

       

 

    Tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus)

       

 

    Cuban gar (Atractosteus tristoechus)

       

 

Hybrid Gars - several hybrids exist in the family Lepisosteidae, two of which are shown here.

    'Crocodile gars'

    Crocodile gar type I (Lepisosteus platostomus x Atractosteus spatula)

       

 

    Crocodile gar type II (Lepisosteus platyrhincus or oculatus x Atractosteus spatula)

       

 

    Crocodile gar type III (Lepisosteus osseus x Atractosteus spatula)

       

 

Gar 'Morphs'

    Xanthic morph "gold gar" (Lepisosteus platyrhincus)
